January 16, 2013. I decided to post an old sketch of the Schliengen rathaus. It's been seven months since we moved back to America, and I'm processing some of the changes we have gone through. I'm less inspired to draw my surroundings for one thing. I have a feeling it will be summer break before I actually crank out some city scenes of the Bay area. Even then, I'm wondering if the process will engage me in the same way as it did in Europe. The thing I feel pretty sure about, in regards to drawing, is that I need to somehow keep it going, even if it's only a couple hours a week. Life is definitely full, with home, teaching, new friends, and what-not. But the impetus to draw somehow lingers.

Hi Rob, I'm really reassured to have seen this post as I moved home to England from Sweden in the summer and somehow daily drawing hasn't been the same since- I didn't expect changing surroundings to have such an effect. I know what you mean about wanting to keep it going but maybe in a slightly different form. I'll look forward to seeing what you do- I've enjoyed your blog a lot.
Thanks, Charlotte. I bet Sweden was a hard place to leave. I enjoyed a beautiful week there with my wife's family. All the best with your move back home.
There do seem to be some fine places in your part of the world Rob. I enjoy reading the Walk Simply blog & Lloyd Kahn's blog. These together with the images you share give me glimpse of lands I am unlikely to be able to visit. I hope you find new scenes to capture on paper & enjoy :o)
Thanks, Owl. I'm seeing some very interesting scenes up in Oakland and in the big city. I just have to find some time to do it.
Yes, I did notice that you seem to find it hard to find your focus in subjects, I never realised that such a thorough change of genius loci (the feeling of the place) could have that effect. It will pop up, just keep going like you said yourself.
Wow, I love this drawing! The shading on the house is so well done, and the different types of pen strokes are perfect for each texture. I do hope you keep drawing!
Such a beautiful place, full of memory! May you find new blessings to draw, though the environment is so different.
Thanks, Katherine and Vicky. I'll just keep my eyes open to what is next! I just have to pay attention.
